9/18/25 Case Studies
A Clinician’s Perspective. Leonore Tjia
How should therapists and counselors assess client readiness for surrogate partner therapy? What kinds of considerations ought therapists and counselors have in mind when preparing for, accompanying a client through and integrating SPT into treatment? Leonore Tjia, Marriage and Family Therapy trainee, will present a case study from the clinician's side of the triad, including presenting issues, countertransference, the case conceptualization, and outcomes of surrogate partner therapy. She will also reflect more broadly on SPT's potential application as a relational healing modality for people with developmental trauma.
Working with Clients from Collectivist Cultures, Eileen Chao and Kai Wu
Considerations to have when working with clients who grew up in a collective culture, as it greatly differs from the individualist culture we were raised with here in the US.
Case Studies in Cultivating Resilience in SPT. Andrew Heartman
A big part of SPT is helping clients become more resilient in the face of stress or challenges. In this presentation, we look at how we can achieve that goal, including viewing and discussing case studies showing ways to build resilience in actual practice.
This session will go from 3:00 to 5:40 Pacific time, which includes 2.5 hours and allows for a 10-minute break somewhere in the middle, at a time that is appropriate for the material. Then the guest speakers will leave us, and there will be an additional half hour, from 5:40 to 6:10, which will be a facilitated discussion and integration of the prior content. This last half hour is optional, so if you’ve had enough at that point you are welcome to skip it. If you choose to stay, you will be invited to consider questions, either all together or in breakout groups, like “What most impacted you from today’s session?” “How do you think you can incorporate this in your work as a surrogate partner?”
