7/10/25 SPT Foundations

Advance Reading (a 6-minute read): The Evolution of SPT

Also in advance, please consider the following questions: What defines SPT? How do you distinguish it from other practices? If you take another practice and you incorporate a therapist, does that make it SPT? Why or why not?

SPT Professional Context. Andrew Heartman

  • The origins of SPT and how it has changed since originally conceived.
  • How we have modified the traditional Sensate Focus protocol to fit into the Wheel of Consent Relational Framework
  • What defines SPT?
  • Importance of the Triadic Model
  • Dual Attunement

Conducting a Three-Way Meeting. Andrew, Carlene

This session will prepare you to conduct an effective three-way meeting, including having the opportunity to role-play one. Even in cases where the three-way meeting is not possible or practical, the procedures used will be valuable at the start of any client relationship.

Goal Setting: Explicit and Implicit, Andrew Heartman

In the SPT process, in addition to the stated goals of the client, there are always additional goals that we hold for them that they may not have been aware of. Most client goals are too large and complex to be addressed directly, so we have to be able to break goals down into subgoals, in order to know the next best step. This session will help you develop the skill of forming a concrete strategy from clients’ stated goals.

About the Presenters

This session will go from 3:00 to 5:40 Pacific time, which includes 2.5 hours and allows for a 10-minute break somewhere in the middle, at a time that is appropriate for the material. Then the guest speakers will leave us, and there will be an additional half hour, from 5:40 to 6:10, which will be a facilitated discussion and integration of the prior content. This last half hour is optional, so if you’ve had enough at that point you are welcome to skip it. If you choose to stay, you will be invited to consider questions, either all together or in breakout groups, like “What most impacted you from today’s session?” “How do you think you can incorporate this in your work as a surrogate partner?”
